An important aspect of your dog’s social training is to make sure as a puppy; it comes into contact with plenty of children [who are not going t o cause it harm]. If this aspect of the dog’s training is overlooked, the dog could become a problem when around children.

Children; on the other hand, need to be taught what is the right and wrong behaviour when approaching, or handling a dog or puppy. It is very important to teach children the do's and the don'ts. For instance, children should be taught never to hit or tease the dog, and to always respect the dog's right to want to sleep or eat.

A dog will often retaliate when provoked beyond endurance, by biting. When children see a big dog in the street, they should not approach that dog, nor should they run away either. When a dog sees a child running away their first instinct is to chase.

Because dogs are descendants of the wolf, they have pack mentality; consequently they see children as having less authority than themselves. As you can well imagine this can lead to problems unless the dog is given firm guidelines right from the start as to where it's position in the family is.

The main problem here is when the children come in contact with a dog that is not their own. This is why it is important to educate a child in the right behaviour towards other dogs that are not part of their household.
So to summarise the situation between dogs and children, there needs to be education of both the dog and the child, leading to a better understanding of the needs of both.
