Training your puppy to be clean in the house shouldn't be the daunting task that it initially appears to be. A puppy's natural instinct is to keep his sleeping and play area clean. Most importantly, the are where the puppy is going to be housed needs to be fairly small during the training period. It will be almost impossible to house train a puppy if he is given free rein to run all over the house and garden.

Routine, routine, prevention and common sense are important factors in this area of the training. The puppy needs to be taken outside as soon you.

1 Get up in the morning
2 As soon as it wakes up after sleep
3 After a busy play period
4 After sleeping
5 After eating
6 At least every hour when it is very small

Select and area in your yard that you want the puppy to use regularly. Take it there and keep the puppy moving in that area. Choose a suitable command .eg 'toilets' 'wees' or something like that and keep it just for this purpose. Stay with the puppy until it has done what is required, and then give lots of praise. Take the puppy back into the house, do not just walk off and leave. If the puppy does not perform and you haven't the time to keep trying, confine it again to the small area. Don't leave the puppy there for too long or it will probably foul the bedding. Take your puppy outside about 10 minutes later and try again. When it has done what is required, then it can become a member of the family again and join in with the household.

Puppies up to 12 weeks are not making 'mistakes' if they foul inside. The mistake is yours. Either, you didn't get the puppy outside quick enough, or you didn't wait long enough with it outside to make sure the puppy was empty.

Don't get angry and punish the puppy if it makes a mistake. Do not rub his nose in it if you find a puddle of a mess somewhere. The puppy will not understand why you are cross.

Do not use ammonia-based cleaners; it will smell like urine, which will encourage the puppy to use that spot again. White vinegar diluted with water takes the smell away and discourages the puppy from using that area again.

Remember; don't let the puppy have free range through the house. You can't help but have problems if you do so.

The puppy will start to get used to what is expected of him, and you will notice signs when it is starting to feel uncomfortable. The puppy may appear to be agitated, may sniff the floor, or will run around in circles etc. You should be able to read the signs if you take notice and get to know your pups behaviour.

With a bit of time and effort and plenty of routine, you will have a puppy that is house trained and a pleasure to live with.
