It all began at a very young age. I was about
eight when my dad brought home a family pet … a tri-coloured
Cavalier named Lucy. From the very beginning, dad would take her
to work and driving in the car, since he was a tool importer. After
a while, all his customers and employees came to know and love Lucy
– if she were not with him for some reason, they all wondered
where she was!
When Lucy was about three years old, dad decided that
he wanted her to have just one litter of pups. So we all did our
research on how to find a good partner for Lucy. We also spoke to
her breeder who was very helpful.
Lucy had five pups but unfortunately, they all died.
I decided then that when I grew up, I was going to breed Cavalier
King Charles Spaniels. And when I was about twelve, my mum bought
a dog. You guessed it – another Cavalier King Charles Spaniel:
a Blenheim girl called Annie!
In 2006, after four happy years of marriage and children
– and after many discussions – I convinced my husband
that I needed a hobby. I joined the Cavalier King Charles Club of
Victoria and started going to dog shows, where I would talk to different
people about the breed. My enquiries for a good breeder sent me
in the direction of Sue Arthur who, coincidentally, was the breeder
of our very first Cav! Through Sue in 2007, we found Archie (SUEBEAU
KING FREDERICK) and knowing that one day I wanted to start breeding,
I began to do more research into the requirements for becoming a
registered breeder.
In 2008, I sat for the Prefix Accreditation Programme
and passed! And now the fun began! I had to think of a breeder’s
prefix and that’s how CANNINGVILLE CAVALIERS came about.
In August 2008, Sue contacted me and asked whether
I wanted a female to start off my breeding program. After much discussion,
my husband and I decided that we would have a look at this dog.
Of course, we fell in love with Sommer (SUEBEAU SOMMER STAR LADY)
and brought her home. In November 2008, Sommer gave birth to six
healthy, happy and very playful puppies!
I thank Sue for being my mentor. I could not have come
this far without her help and advice.
Now the story continues …
April 2009: Sue decided that Amber should come
and live with Sommer for a couple of months till she is in season.
In August 2009 Amber came into season and we both decided that Amber
should go to a nice tri boy. In September we found out that Amber
is expecting her first litter of puppies in October 2009.
CHANGING OF THE GUARD: After many hours of many
conversations and hours of deliberation, we decided to sell both
Sommer and Amber to pet homes in July 2010, where they can both
live the life that all Cavaliers get used to quite quickly. After
looking around for another Blenheim Female I found ELFKING GWENDOLYN
(Jemma) and I have also found a little tri girl, ENJELIK EARTH SONG
TRI COLOUR (Lucy). These dogs as you can well imagine have pretty
big shoes to fill, because they will be the start of Canningville
Cavaliers' new and up and coming breeding programme in 18 months
or so, Here at the home of Canningville Cavalier we will be kept
busy with some little puppies of our own to watch grow up and mature
and hopefully produce healthy, happy and playful puppies in a few
years. Watch out for pics of Gemma and
Lucy coming soon
